The Dewey Mt. Recreational Center in Saranac Lake, NY hosted the Peru Nordic Cookie Classic NYSSRA race. Great conditions and a challenging 10 km course tested NYSSRA’s finest. This race served as a fundraiser for Dewey and the Cystic Fibrosis Lifestyle Foundation.
Tupper Lake’s Charlie Bencze, skiing for the Stratton Mountain School, won the 10 km men’s race. Bencze held off Paul Smith’s College’s Matt Piper and Peru Nordic’s Jon Santor for the win.
The women’s race was won by NYSEF’s Malie Sapp, who in the true spirit of the Cookie Classic, slapped on kick wax for today’s freestyle event. Sapp bested HURT Nordic’s Jill Koziol and NYSEF’s Emma Zdgeibloski.
The Junior 5 km races were won by NYSEF’s Royal McDonnell and Nina Armstrong. And the “Fun Ski” race was won by Dewey’s own Colter Cheney-Seymour.
The big winner on the day was Peru Nordic’s Jon Santor who captured the Peru National Championship trophy. Santor, kept under serious pressure by Chris Rose and Keith Kogut, managed to force his way through the soft conditions to grab his first National Championship Shield.
By virtue of a strong team effort, Peru Nordic also won the Clash of the Titans team challenge and took home the severed head of Medusa the Gorgon. Peru had four skiers in the top ten, demolishing HURT Nordic and Paul Smiths for the team challenge.
The real winners were the Cystic Fibrosis Lifestyle Foundation and Dewey Mt who received all proceeds from this race. Peru Nordic thanks all who came out to race and all who volunteered. Your efforts today went towards some great causes and are much appreciated. Oh, and the Cookies were awesome… SKI AND DESTROY!!
