The Empire State Winter Games did not disappoint! Although the venue was changed to the ski jumps because of lack of snow, the courses and the crew at the jumps (coming over from MVH) did an awesome job of running a great event. “At times it felt like we were skiing at Holmenkollen… and I felt like Therese Johaug,” said Chris “Hand of Doom” Rose.
On Friday night, under the lights, the ESWG Sprint Prologue took place. “Perhaps the toughest 3.666 minutes of racing I’ve ever done!” said Jim “Harvester of Sorrow” Kobak.
On Saturday, the distance race was shortened to 10km, or 4 laps of the brutal 2.5 km course.
On Sunday, the TourNADO finished with the 7.5km classic. Peru Nordic took home a ton of medals over the weekend, including GOLD for Chris Rose (x4), Connie Prickett (x2), Kevin Prickett (x2), Chris Beattie (x4), Silver for Jim Kobak (x3) and Bronze for Ed Lis, Brian White (x2) and Dave F’n Burt.
Connie Pricket and Brian White did some spectacular skiing, and some spectacular Superbowl picking! Both Nordiques went with the Broncos in the Big Game, and although Connie missed the MVP, she just about nailed the final score and captured her first FOAM FINGER, emblematic of Superbowl of Skiing supremacy!
The War Ensemble continues this week on Wednesday. If the Ho opens it’ll be there, otherwise it’ll be at the Jumps. Meet at 4:15ish for a 4:30 start (it’s staying light out later, you know).
It started with a tumultuous signing…. And ended with some incredible skiing.
Peru Nordic set the tone for the NYSSRA Championship weekend by coming to terms with Dr. Robert Duncan “JackedUp of OldMan” Douglas just days before the relays. This set the NYSSRA scene into a frenzy and had HURT Nordic on their heels!
To win the overall championship, Peru Nordic needed a sweep of the relays, and then needed to win the 20 km Classic outright in order to claim their first NYSSRA Nordic Championship Banner since 2008.
In the women’s relay, the team of Amanda “Anvil of Angst” Zullo and Janet “Banshee of Bedlam” Findlay won the day, barely pacing the team of Connie “DarkKnight of Nature” Prickett and Star “DeathStar of Damage” Cook.
In the mixed men/women relay, the duo of Jan “Wheels of Steel” Wellford and Rosanne “Dormina of Dessication” VanDorn crushed the field. The team of Andy “Seasons of Abyss” Wei, Heike “Altar of Sacrifice” Wei and Marque “Marquis of Malevolence” Moffett also scored huge points. This set up an epic clash in the men’s relay.
Peru Nordic’s team of Kevin “Kvertlak of Power” Prickett and the newly acquired Duncan “JackedUp of OldMan” Douglas rallied and passed both HURT Squads to finish second overall. Jim “Harvester of Sorrow” Kobak and Mike “Disinfector of Despair” Wynn managed to scrape out a fifth place. Ed “Distributor of Pain” Lis and Chris “Hellhound of Hades” Beattie finished 8th and Joe “Colossus of Chaos” Korzinecki with Brian “Battleaxe of Aggression” White finished 9th.
When the dust settled, HURT Nordic eaked out a one-point victory in the Men’s Relay. Thus the overall championship would be settled during the 20 km classic. If Peru won, they needed HURT to finish no better than 3rd in order to win the overall Club Championship Series.
In the 20 km Classic, Peru’s Duncan Douglas and Jan Wellford finished 1 and 2 ahead of HURT’s Aaaron Huneck… But, HURT’s Heidi Underwood won the women’s race ahead of Saratoga’s Gabriella Fritelli and Peru’s Rosanne Van Dorn.
When the points were tallied, Peru Nordic finished the season with 223 Points in the Club Series… HURT Nordic finished with 226 and another Club Championship. In spite of the disappointment, Peru Nordic managed to drink a lot of beer and vowed to avenge the defeat next year!!!
It is perhaps the most wonderful day of the year! Loppet Day at MVH is a celebration of Nordic skiing and a day for the Peru Nordiques to kick serious ass and take names.
This year’s Loppet was a little different than in the past… It was on Sunday instead of the traditional Saturday. There was no post-race banquet/awards at the Arena, just a post-race buffet and a handful of syrup awards after the race. Beers were limited to one per racer, but at least Peru Nordic collected the most beer tickets from folks driving home. Age classes were expanded to 10 year increments and only age-class winners won prizes. However, the changes did not take away from the fact that this race is awesome. There is no course as challenging as the Loppet course and this year conditions were superb.
Peru Nordic started Twenty-two skiers in the various races, 25 km classic and skate, and 50 km classic. Full Results are available at this link.
Stan “Stansel Adams” Hatch won his class in the 50 km classic and finished 3rd overall.
The Power-couple dynamic duo of Janet Findlay and David Hunter each won their respective age classes in the 25 km Classic.
Many Nordiques had superb days on snow, and without question, the 2015 Loppet was SKIED and DESTROYED!
The NYSSRA Season concludes next weekend at Van Ho with the NYSSRA Championships. Peru Nordic looks to win it’s first Club Championship Series title since 2008 with a strong showing in the relays and the 20 km NYSSRA Champions Cup Classic race.
Mike Wynn and Jan Wellford dueled throughout the day, but at the finish, The wiley veteran Wynn out-sprinted Wellford to capture his third consecutive Peru National Championship and take the Shield back to his home in Queensbury.
This year’s COOKIE CLASH at Dewey Mountain featured a new course, IRON BILL: Fn HOSTILE!!!, which challenged skiers both up and down the mountain. The leaders, Wynn and Wellford, skied the 3 x 3.75 km course together, exchanging leads a few times. But in the end it was Wynn’s savvy that got the best of Jan. Glenville Hills Nordic’s Eric Seyse captured Bronze with HURT Nordic’s Chris Yarsevich winning the coveted wooden medal.
In the Women’s Race, HURT Nordic’s Heidi Underwood was challenged early by Peru Nordic’s Rosanne Van Dorn, but ultimately Heidi was able to capture the womens’ race. Peru Nordic’s Janet Findlay won the bronze and the wooden medal was bestowed upon Peru Nordics “Smilin’ Connie” Prickett.
The Kids’ races saw local Dewey Mt Ski leaguers duke it out over one lap. Nick Kelting won the boys’ U14 race, while Olga Tumanova won the girls U12 race.
Ten hard-core skiers turned out for the inaugural COOKIE DASH. These intrepid souls ripped through a rollicking course featuring ski obstacles… some even did it three times. All enjoyed COOKIES at the finish!
All proceeds from this race are donated to the Friends of Dewey Mountain and to the Cystic Fibrosis Lifestyle Foundation. Thanks to all who came out to help Peru Nordic and Team Cookie to ski, cheer and volunteer to Crumble Cystic Fibrosis.
