Snow Drought doesn’t stop the Black Train of Pain from Rollin’

SAM_2491
This winter could go either way…

It’s been a disappointing winter to say the least… however, the Peru Nordic Masters managed to get in some quality racing over the weekend sticking to their mantra “if there’s snow, we’re gonna go!”

SAM_2501
The track at Gore… Hundreds of High-schoolers! (but only 2 shorts over tights noticed on the day… a new record low)

On Saturday January 16 the Mini-Van of Evil, piloted by Stan Hatch, picked up a bunch of hardy Nordiques and delivered them to the Queensbury Glens Falls Invitational at Gore Mountain in North Creek (yes, it’s kind of  confusing).  Anyway, the folks at Gore were able to blow snow over a good 2 km course for the 6 km freestyle race.

SAM_2509
Spider-Stan… M5M Champ!

Chris Rose paced the Nordiques, finishing with the 3rd fastest Masters’ time behind Adk Vauhti’s Matt Tornianen and HURT’s Dave Kvam.  Rose won the heavily contested M4M division, while Nordiques Jim Kobak and Brian White completed the sweep in that category.  Stan Hatch won the M5M, and Dave F’n BURT! won the M7M age class.

SAM_2525
Old School!

On Sunday, a last minute (6:45 am, to be exact) decision was made to enter the USCSA Collegiate Race at the Paul Smith’s VIC at 9 am.  Quickly, the Nordiques accredited and matriculated into the Southeastern Clinton University of Medicine (SCUM) in order to be college-eligible and ready to go head-to-head with the likes of Clarkson University, Caselton College, Paul Smith’s College and UVMNSC .

SAM_2527
It was “Dale of Norway Sweater”-cold at the Paul Smith’s race.  Luckily, Stan was prepared.

Chris Rose was the scramble leg and blistered into 5th place.  That’s where the team stayed as Kobak and Hatch also double-poled the 2km classic relay course on their skate skis.  The team was awarded with the age-adjusted participation award of Paul Smith’s Maple Syrup!

SAM_2520
Extra VHCS points to the Paul Smith’s coaches for inviting us and letting us race… maybe next year we’ll get a photo with Kirsten’s eyes open.

The War Ensemble continues on Wednesday afternoon, and then more racing next weekend at Saratoga Biathlon Club… maybe?

Connie Prickett holds off challengers in Epic Tour de Ski Finale

The Champ!

Breaking News: Connie Prickett drinks the blood of the vanquished as she wins the 2016 Peru Nordic Tour de Ski!

Maswick took these guys on… anyone need new shoes or a fashionable handbag?

For the first time, the Tour de Ski Finale was run in pursuit style…  The first one across the line would drink from the Chalice!
Going into the finale, Connie Prickett had a precarious lead on the rest of the field.  Her biggest challenge appeared to be from Bob Maswick.  However, at the last minute, Bob pulled himself from the race, and potential Tour de Ski glory to pursue a career in alligator wrestling instead.
Other skiers followed based on their place behind the leader (using a complex algorithm calculated by the VHCS Supercomputer, of course)
Every skier skied two Laps… but, skiers had to roll the “Dice of Destiny” at least once during the race to see which course they would have to follow (yes, many skiers were introduced to new routing on Flatlander +, Flatlander X, ZigZag and/or East Mt Cutoff… believe me, it was hard to break old directional habits)

The 2015 and 2016 Champions… Who will sip from the Chalice next year?

Connie’s biggest challenge came from Jan Wellford.  Jan started three and a half minutes behind Connie, and with some fast skiing and savvy dice rolling, he was able to leapfrog almost the entire field and come with in meters of besting Prickett at the line.  Chris Rose, in spite of rolling “double ZigZag” managed to continue his dominant skiing and won the bronze medal.  Rose even had nice things to say about the VHCS supercomputer and thus was given a few “attitude adjustment” bonus points.  Last year’s Tour champion, Janet Findlay started 2:15 behind Connie and managed to charge into 5th place.  “I needed to roll a double Flatlander Plus to contend, and I got a ZigZag!”
Final Tour Standings

Tour de Ski stage 2: Ski O! Beattie Battles, Prickett Pounces!

Chris Beattie… focused and headed in the right direction

Chris Beattie tore up the ski-o course today, but it was Connie Prickett who moved to the top of the Tour de Ski leader board after 2 stages.   Connie leads Ed Lis and Bob Maswick as the three top contenders for overall tour supremacy.

Note: Points being deducted!

The big loser on the day was Chris Rose who lost many points out on the ski-o course due to “attitude adjustment”

SNOW at the HO!

The Gauntlet got a fresh overhaul today… gone is the “relay” version of this race.  Now, skiers team up and must ski for an hour, trying to earn as many points as they can by 1 pm.  “No one has to stand around and wait in the cold anymore… this is an aging-skier-friendly race” said race director, Jim Kobak.  Skiers were given a base score for their age, then given points for each of the loops they skied (starting and finishing at Gauntlet Stadium)  For example, the Bobcat loop was worth 1 point, but if you ventured around Innerloopen, that would get your team 8 points.

It’s not a great photo, but trust me, that trophy is AWESOME!

The team of Ed Lis and Chris Rose paired up and dominated the competition, putting in many laps of Innerloopen and East Mt Cutoff.  Rose even knew the new direction of Flatlander Plus!  By getting the victory, Lis and Rose have the lead in the Tour de Ski, and won the Mark Sanchez Trophy of Epic Awesomeness!

Everyone is psyched to be on snow and racing!

Second place went to the duo of Connie Prickett and Stan Hatch.  While bronze was awarded to the pair of Janet Findlay and Bob Maswick.

The second stage of the Tour de Ski is Chris Rose’s favorite event… the Ski-O try it race at Mt Van Hoevenberg tomorrow!

  2. Hatch/ C.Prickett… 66 points
  3. Findlay/ Maswick… 62 points
  4. Hunter/ Moffett… 55 points

The List… BEST METAL of 2015

Winter is upon us and it is time for the HARVESTER of Sorrow to reveal the best in METAL for the past year.

There has been lots of good METAL released in the past calendar year.

#11.  SKITANICA:  Total Metal

400x400x9ce46dec6d01c0f00f77c84c28a19467-png-pagespeed-ic-1432641017
https://www.reverbnation.com/skitanica/album/98808-total-metal?wordpress=1

Nordic Skiing’s most obscure band unleashes another titanic behemoth of pure f**king METAL!  Killer Tracks:  Baptized in Beer, Battlesnake, Bloodsucker.

#10. NYLITHIA: Hyperthrash

This is an amazing album, almost like a psychedelic thrash meets electronica experiment.  It has a spacey industrial vibe, but it definitely is a thrash metal album… and it’s fast as hell.  Killer Tracks:  Razor, Blüdwolves, Whips and Chainz.

#9  SAXON: Battering Ram

One of my all-time favorite bands is back with another strong album.  This is pure metal with some killer riffs and hooks.  And as usual, Saxon come up with catchy choruses that are easy to sing along to and it totally rocks.  Killer Tracks: The Devil’s Footprint, The Queen of Hearts, Destroyer.

#8 HATCHET: Fear Beyond Lunacy

Hatchet is a modern Bay-Area thrash band that totally rips…  Killer Tracks: Living in Extinction,  Prophet of Delusion, Tearing into Hell.

#7 SAVAGE MASTER: Mask of the Devil

This is a true-metal album that could have easily been released in the mid-80s.  Savage Master has it all, satanic themes and rockin’ songs with a strong female lead-vocalist, Stacey Savage.  Killer Tracks: Blood on the Rose, Mask of the Devil, Ripper in Black.

#6 BLACK BREATH: Slaves Beyond Death

Blackened-Death-Thrash!!! I am always a sucker for the Black Metal sound woven into thrash metal.  This album is a huge barrage of sound and it is heavy as shit.  Killer Tracks: Reaping Flesh, A Place of Insane Cruelty, Slaves Beyond Death.

#5 ULTRA-VIOLENCE: Deflect the Flow

Just insane ear-ripping thrash metal!!! This album is a full-on rip from start to finish.  They even pull of a classic Venom cover of “Don’t Burn the Witch”.   Killer Tracks: Burning Through Scars, Lost in Decay, The Way I’ll Stay.

#4  RAM: Subversvm

Metal in its utmost metallic! Metal.  Killer Tracks: The Omega Device, The Ursurper, Eyes of the Night

#3  SLAYER: Repentless

FUCKIN’ SLAAAAAAAYYYYYYYEEERRRRRarrrghghgarghgh!!! Killer Tracks: Repentless, Implode, When the Stillness Comes.

#2 IRON MAIDEN: Book of Souls

Wow… Empire of the Clouds may be the most epic song ever.  Eighteen minutes!

Killer Tracks:  If Eternity Should Fail, Empire of the Clouds, The Red and the Black.

#1 ANGELUS APATRIDA: Hidden Evolution

This is a great thrash metal band from Spain.  They consistently put out the best, most ripping thrash, but yet they have catchy riffs and choruses.  In fact, I think there’s a lot of Joe Elliott/Def Leppard in the choruses (believe it or not, that’s a good thing… it really works.  Imagine if Def Leppard stuck to their metal roots and became a thrash band!)  This album is great! Do yourself a favor and pick it up.  Killer Tracks: End Man, Immortal, Wanderers Forever, Serpents on Parade.

The Force is Strong with Us… the weather is not.

janrenJan “Kylo Ren” Wellford won the “season opener” rollerski race at Point Au Roche in convincing, Theresa Johaug-esqe, fashion.  In spite of sleep depravation and extra goatee-induced drag, Jan was able to trust his feelings and rip apart the field and awaken the Force…. (note, he has not yet been able to awaken Old Man Winter…)

12356772_10153598595075589_262400606493342202_oJan finished ahead of the dueling Chris “Han Solo” Rose and Mike “Chewbacca” White who sprinted to the line in second and third place.  Safely securing the Wooden medal was Jim “Jabba” Kobak ahead of Brian “Lando Calrissian” White.  Alex “Boba Fett” Trumper put in a strong effort to make sure that Peru Nordic swept the top six places on the day.

force awakensAs a green Xmas looms, the lack of snow and wintry weather could be depressing… but fear not, the WAR ENSEMBLE will rage on with or without snow!

The first official War Ensemble will take place tomorrow, Wednesday December 16.  Meet the Nordiques up at Point Au Roche at 3:30 ish, or get out and do an equivalent workout on rollerskis, running sneakers, mountain bike, kayak… whatever.   Just post your workout and a photo to our facebook page and you will get some sweet VHCS points!
