The annual Run/Hike/Run Mountain Running Extravaganza known as the Patch Sprint is set to get underway tomorrow, May 23 in Willsboro, NY. This adventure race challenges participants over 12.5 miles and 4500′ of climbing over Bare, Rattlesnake and Sugarloaf Mountains before the final charge up the devastating Mount Poko-Moonshine.
The Patch Sprint, created as a formal event in 1996, is a weekend long fund raising festival and reunion featuring dinners, parties, a race, and a popular trek. The event is open to members of the Pok-O-MacCready “Family” (current and alumni) and their invited guests, as well as guests and donors to the Adirondack Scholarship Foundation. Since 2000, the Patch Sprint has served as a fund raiser for the Adirondack Scholarship Foundation. Last year, $8,000.00 was raised by racers, trekkers, volunteers and friends with another $4,000 coming from a private trust. The Adirondack Scholarship Foundation, founded in 1981, is responsible for providing funds to families of children hoping to enjoy a summer camping experience.
This year several Peru Nordique Skitanic Beerserker Warriors will join in the Battle for the Janny! The race has been won by Peru Nordiques each of the last two seasons, but without Jan Wellford or Aaron Newell returning, and a handful of elite HURT Nordic racers it will be hard for Peru to keep the Patch Sprint World Championship Title. Here are the official Windbriefs predictions for the 2015 race.
Women’s Race: Peru should be able to stranglehold the Women’s race, perhaps even sweep the podium. Expect Patty “Peakbagger of Pugnacity” Hurlburt and Tyra “Tyrant of Tyranny” Wynn to finish 1-2, each with times under 2:30. Elizabeth “Pythoness of Butchered-Hell” Bouchard-Hall and Betsey “Czarina of Wrath” Richert are rookies, but definitely fast enough to keep it under 3 hours and probably finish in the top 5 of the women’s field.
Men’s Race TOP 5: Jason “Willbury of Woe” Fiegl should finish in the top 5 with a time under 2:20. Jay is a 6-time champ, but nagging injuries and various O.L.D. symptoms are starting to catch up with him.
Men’s Race TOP 10: Jon “Bonecrusher of Arthropyosis” Mulholland, Kevin “Kvertalak of Power” Prickett and Brian “Battleaxe of Aggression” White should be able to finish in the top 10 with times around 2:30. 5-time Champ, Jim “Harvester of Sorrow” Kobak, has definitely slowed down but should be able to keep it under 2:45 and may even sneak into the top 10 (but probably not).
Men’s Race TOP 20: Jake “Jackal of Judas” Gittler will be angry after the Rangers lose again tonight, so he will be emotionally exhausted, but pissed off enough to put in his best time, well under 3 hours. Jerry “Boss of Brutality” Ross will have his fastest time ever, unfortunately it will be on Friday because he has another obligation on race day, so it will not count.
There are a few other Nordiques who will be trekking the course. Regardless of the outcome, expect a great turnout and a fantastic day in the Adirondacks… RUN – HIKE and DESTROY!
