The first big Nor’easter of the season, Winter Storm Damon, has been dumping heavy wet snow all over the Northern Adirondacks… setting up killer conditions for the Early Racing Season! Wednesday War Ensemble (VHCS): The weekly battles continue at the Ho each Wednesday at 4 pm. This week, 12/10 will be in classic technique as racers traverse the infamous 6.66 km War Ensemble course, throwing tennis balls for time bonuses in between laps. Each week the technique alternates between skate/classic, so come on out each Wednesday and earn points towards the VHCS Viking Helmet Championship!
The Season Opener (NYSSRA): NYSEF Season Opener is 12/14. Start time: 10:30 am. freestyle, mass start by age group (this may change depending on venue). U16 boys/girls 5km. 10km all other racers. BKL kids race to follow, lollipop ½ km, U10 2km, U12 3km, U14 4km. Location will most likely be at the Ho, but the Jumps are ready as a fall back if necessary. The PIE Race (NYSSRA): This year the Osceola Pie race will be the1st stage of the “Wilkinson Cup” mini-series. This race is at the Osceola Tug Hill XC Center and is shaping up to be a big event with some of the most delicious prizes you will see all season. Here are the details: WILKINSON CUP SERIES RACE #1 Classic technique. 5k for U16, U18, Senior, and Masters, 2k for Bill Koch skiers 10:30 a.m. start for Bill Koch, 11:00 a.m. for juniors, open, and masters, interval start Pre-reg by Dec. 18, $20. ADK Vauhti Skiathlon (NYSSRA): Head to Day NY on December 28. This is a great way to test your speed in both techniques in the same race! 4k classic followed by 4k freestyle for all age groups; mass start at 12:00 noon Entry fee $20 NYSSRA members, $25 non-NYSSRA. Peru Nordic Tour de Ski (VHCS): The annual celebration of ski racing and training kicks off on December 28 and continues through January 4. Skiers earn points by training, racing, and hiking during the Tour De Ski. The overall winner receives the inglorious Tour De Ski Chalice! Stay tuned to Windbriefs for details.
THE GAUNTLET RELAY(VHCS): The New Year begins with Peru Nordic’s oldest ski race! Part of the Tour de Ski, the Gauntlet pits teams of skiers against one another in an epic battle of skiing supremacy. HIGH NOON on 1/1!
