Gripping excitement was par for the course at Willsboro National as Chris Rose and Jim Kobak battled on the fairways in the annual Peru Nordic Masters Masters Rollerski/Golf Race/Tournament.
The Rollerski featured a 5.666 km race in the sweltering heat of Peru, NY. Kobak led early, but Rose attacked at the “four minute hill” about 2 km into the race. Rose put in too much of a gap for any of the other racers to respond. Keith Kogut stayed right on Kobak’s heels and made a move about 3.5 km in. Kobak countered and attacked on a downhill to solidify second place.
Rose’s win in the Rollerski race gave him four strokes heading into golf. Kobak earned two strokes and Kogut got a single stroke as reward for his rollerski podium placing.
On the course, Rose stormed out early and it looked like he had the Masters wrapped up by the third hole. However, some solid play by Kobak, and an exceptionally poor 4th hole by Rose made things interesting. Kogut struggled most of the day, but was well pre-covered with Genesee Cream Ale.
By the 7th hole, Kogut was out of it. But Kobak hammered a blistering 150 yard drive with his putter to win the 7th hole stroke preem. This led a charge that saw him tied with Rose going into the 9th hole. Needing a two-putt to win, Kobak felt the pressure and couldn’t put away the victory.
On the one-hole playoff, both Rose and Kobak smashed drives just off the green. Rose’s second shot rested safely next to the hole. Kobak, again had the pressure on and landed his second shot a foot shy… only to have it roll off the sloping green…. and his chance of winning his first Peru Nordic Masters Masters was dashed.
