NYSSRA Champs: Nostradamus got it right! (sort of…)

He got that right.

Noted clerical prophet, Nostradamus, famously and quite controversially prognosticated the NYSSRA Championship.  Scholars discussed the possible interpretations of his noted visions for many hours before the races got underway on Saturday at the Saratoga Biathlon Club.  Here’s what we now know…

He got it right! (sort of…)

The Lion in Winter…

Nostradamus wrote:“The young lion will overcome the older one,
  On the field of combat in a single battle;
He will pierce his eyes through a golden cage,
Two wounds made one, then he dies a cruel death.”

The psychic may have gotten a few details wrong, but perhaps his original visions were just slightly misinterpreted.  For example, the “young lion” overcoming the older one most undoubtedly referred to the NYSSRA Champion Relay tandem of Jon Santor and Mike Wynn.  But “overcome” is a mis-translation of  the French est venu après, which more accurately means “came after.” This most definitely is referring to the exchange at the tag zone during the relay when Wynn tagged off to Santor after the first lap.  The two skiers then “pierced the eyes” of HURT Nordic’s dreaded Three Headed Monster.  The battery of Wynn and Santor came together, “…made one” and afflicted “two wounds” to the HURT team.  Hence, Nostradamus’ prediction of gold for Peru Nordic most certainly came true.

A person put out by steel…

Nostradamus wrote:Near the gates and within two cities
There will be scourges the like of which was never seen,
Famine within plague, people put out by steel,
Crying to the great immortal God for relief.

Originally scholars thought that there would be a large disruption to the field during the 20 k freestyle race, however it appears that Nostradamus was actually referring to the Club Championship Relay once again… but the predicted disaster befell the team of Jim Kobak and Kirsten Domas.   “Near the Gates” obviously refers to end of the double pole zone just after the start of race.  “People put out by steel” undoubtedly refers to the moment where Jim Kobak lost his right pole to the ski of the “scourge” Eric Seyse.  His Pole was detached clean from the grip, “.…the like of which was never seen.” leaving Kobak to retreat to pick it up.  He then had to alter his tactics after losing at least 30 seconds to the field (“Famine within plague“).  Kobak and Domas managed to win back a few spots, but had to settle for Silver (“Crying… for relief”) in the NYSSRA Mixed Team Relay.

Stan leads the “Banished Dead”

Nostradamus wrote: “From the human flock nine will be sent away,
Separated from judgment and counsel:
Their fate will be sealed on departure
Kappa, Thita, Lambda the banished dead err.”

There were nine Peru Nordic skiers starting in their respective first waves of the 20 km Champions cup race (From the human flock nine will be sent away: Wynn, Santor, Rose, Kobak, Kogut, Hartman, Domas and Findlay).  And there were three skiers “Separated from judgment and counsel” and placed in the second wave (Hatch, Korzinecki and Curcio).  By the end of the race, those “banished dead” skiers ripped through the field to finish 8th “Kappa” (Hatch), 11th “Lambda” (Korzenecki) and 40th “Thita” (Curcio).  Nostradamus nailed this one, accurately predicting the finish of these three (Their fate will be sealed on departure).

Two great Rocks…

Nostradamus wrote: Earthshaking fire from the center of the Earth
Will cause tremors around the New City.
Two great rocks will war for a long time,
Then Arethusa will redden a new river.

I’m pretty sure that Nostradamus got it totally right here.  There was indeed a HUGE battle for the NYSSRA Club Championship between the “Two great rocks” of HURT Nordic and Peru Nordic.  It was a bloody massacre over two days (“…will war for a long time”)  on the snow of Saratoga Biathlon Club.  In the end, both teams could claim victory.  Peru Nordic’s Janet Findlay won the women’s State championship outright. Mike Wynn won the overall Silver medal in the mens race.  In total, 6  Peru skiers were in the top 10 of the mens race.  And, Peru Nordic won 6 age categories on the day.  Peru Nordic’s Jon Santor and Mike Wynn won the NYSSRA Championship Relay Championship.  Jim Kobak and Kirsten Domas finished second in the mixed relay.  HURT had it’s share of age class champions as well, and collected a silver medal in the men’s relay.  However, it wound up being HURT  who went home with the big “Earthshaking” prize by capturing the 2013 Club Championship Banner.  Congratulations to them, and congratulations to all the Peru Nordiques who participated in an awesome event.  And thanks to the Saratoga Biathlon Club for hosting a great weekend!
