Prognosticators have been busy handicapping the 2011 edition of the Iron Madien Triathlon. This year’s event will feature spectacular weather, which may lead to some record-setting performances. Excitement has also swelled around the new enhanced team scoring, which should lead to an epic three-way battle for the Pizzaro trophy between Peru Nordic, HURT and Saratoga Biathlon.
Mike Wynn... former champ and course record holder. Has the potential to be fastest in the run, bike and rollerski. He’s the man to beat.
Austin Huneck… Sufferfest champion. Was close last year while riding a broken bike. Fast on the run and faster on skis. Watch out for this young gun.
Chris Rose… Don’t count out this three time winner and defending champion. Rose is in the best shape of his life and is the best at making the Bike/Rollerski transition.
Brian Halligan… A year older and much faster. Halligan will be fast in the run and on skis, if he can hang with the leaders on the bike, he could land high up on the podium.
David Kvam… Fast on the run and bike, but wrestles with his demons over the Hill of Death. If he can stay on course and solve the Hill of Death puzzle, he may finally break through to victory.
Peru Nordic… Should be starting many NYSSRA Stars, including contenders Wynn and Rose. Jim Kobak, Bob Maswick and Joe Korzinecki will have strong outings. Amanda Zullo will challenge for the women’s overall. Look for Keith Kogut to make an impressive LP Ironman/Iron Maiden double! Still unknown whether Peru Nordic will start Iron Maiden veterans Tim Cowan or Stan Hatch. And there is a possibility NY State Cross Country champion Jon Santor may do the bike leg in a canoe! Prediction: 85 points… 1st place
HURT Nordic… With potentially Kvam, Halligan and Huneck in the top 5, the rest of the HURT just needs to finish in order to capture their second team trophy. Tim Huneck will have a strong outing and will crack the top ten. If a few more HURT skiers make the journey to Peru, they may just pull off the repeat. Prediction: 65 points… 2nd place
Saratoga Biathlon… the darkhorse team is surprisingly strong. Deb Nordyke has owned the women’s championship and will not relinquish the title. Sean Halligan will put together a strong race. Tom Moffett will finally wheel dope. They will definitely have a strong relay team entered. And if the other Wynn shows up for the race… watch out, Saratoga could win it all! Prediction: 40 points… 3rd place
The excitement starts at 9 am tomorrow, Saturday July 30.
