The Peru Nordic SLOP FEST is already a huge hit. The weather was spring-like. And, the turnout for the first Labor far exceeded race organizers’ expectations. “We did not expect these kind of numbers. It’s great to see so many folks getting ready for the Patch Sprint. Luckily our feed station volunteer, Kristin Fiegl, brought a roast.”
The turnout was great, one-third of the Town of Peru was in the race, Jim Kobak, Jerry Ross, Tom Moffett and Chris Rose. Likewise half of the Town of Reber was there, Jason Fiegl. Fiegl led the group out from the Pillars at a quick clip. Kobak made a pass on the first steep section and attacked hard just below the Bare Spot finishing in 11:01. Fiegl regrouped on the Bare Mt Summit Ridge to close the gap to 18 seconds.
Ross and Moffett battled it out, both obviously distracted by what was originally feared to be two lost racers in the Bare Mt. woods. There was an erroneous report that two participants had gotten lost trying to follow the Bare Mt course. To this, Kobak scoffed, “…no one ever gets lost on Bare Mt!” Concerned after finishing the race, Ross and Moffett ran a Patch Sprint Search and Rescue drill, and located the missing party, who revealed that they were not lost. They were just trying to find the most difficult route to the Willsboro Country Store.
